I'm personally convinced the Genius loci is a 'real' event/process/ presence/ unfolding. Perhaps more real than the digital effluent we now surround ourselves with. Sounds like a fascinating book. I enjoyed your interpretations. Thanks.

I, too, believe that kind of spirit or whatever we want to call it is real. It is not dependent on human habitation, though it becomes bound up with that in many ways and at all levels from, say, holy wells and wayside shrines to the spirit of a city, as in Doderer.

The Demons would make for an enjoyable summer read if you like to read doorstoppers in the summer. Doderer doesn’t exactly race along at a breathtaking pace, but I find him easier going than others he might be compared with: Proust, Joyce, and fellow Germanophones like Musil, Broch, von Rezzori, and maybe even Mann.

Yes. I know Australian aboriginal tradition recognises 'power places', as does I guess every other shamanic culture and one only has to explore an old English churchyard to understand specific places can be naturally blessed with various types of energetic memory. If you couple that up with the legacy of human input through the centuries then it's quite a heady brew to contemplate.
